Structure-Based Job Interview

Many people are still unfamiliar with the flow of events and sequence of a structure-based job interview. Knowing the details will help applicants become fully focused and stay prepared several days before they step into the office.

The duration will depend on how many interviews and interviewers there are and the specific qualities that they’re looking for among individuals. Applicants should consider time carefully and learn how to properly time their answers so they maximize efficiency and send the message very well.

There are no universal guidelines and rules that define a structure-based job interview. An average interview will last for 30 to 60 minutes. There will be different stages throughout the interview depending on the company and interview panel.

Usually, the first stage involves the introduction or icebreaker wherein the interviewer will try to help the applicant relax more and create rapport for effective and smooth communication. This is usually comprised of questions like “How are you doing today?”, “Feeling nervous?”, “Are you excited?” or “Are you feeling good today?”. This phase generally lasts about 3 minutes.

The Body of the Interview

Next, the interviewing panel will proceed to the next phases of the structure-based interview by asking behavioral questions that will help them know more about the applicant’s background, emotional tendencies and personality.

Interviewers will usually include at least one psychologist to determine the different stages in the applicant’s life that will explain his current behavior and attitude. Some of the notable questions include, “Can you describe your childhood?”, “Did you have many friends in high school?” or “Can you describe your relationship with your family?” All these usually last about 15 to 20 minutes.

Next, the interviewers will move on to substantive questions and remarks about the person’s professional and educational background. This is the part wherein the person will present his core strengths and prove that he is the best candidate for the job and position.

The interviewers will most likely base most of the questions from the information presented on the resume so applicants have to review the details carefully before stepping in.

Some of the expected questions include, “What subjects did you like best in school?”, “Did you receive any awards or achievements?”, “Why did you leave your previous work?”, “What qualities can you offer our company?” and “Why do you think you deserve this job?” This phase will last about 20 to 30 minutes.

Final Guidelines

Applicants should expect three or more individuals or panels to interview them through the different phases of the structure-based job interview. Allocate 3 to 5 minutes to answer each question. It’s best to provide a main statement followed by a couple of supporting statements that will clearly define the main thought.

Some companies will require more than one interview especially if the persons involved are aiming for a high position. Some of the applicants will be eliminated on the first day and then the qualified ones will proceed to another series of interviews on another day until the panel finds the perfect candidate for the job.
